Blazeclan Helps A Leading Banking Firm Move from On-Premises to AWS Cloud

The customer is a leading banking firm in India, which offers a complete range of financial services to agriculture and retail businesses, large and mid-corporates, and MSME sector.

The Need for AWS Cloud Migration

This was the first time that a huge banking organization has aimed to move their workloads and operations to the cloud. They had a directive to move from their system to AWS cloud in approximately 3 to 4 years down the line. Their idea was that every year, at least 25% of workloads must be migrated to the cloud. For deciding exactly which 25% of the infrastructure must be transitioned first to the cloud, Blazeclan’s team conducted a detailed assessment of the customer’s existing environment.

Blazeclan’s Approach for the Customer’s AWS Cloud Migration

A 2 month-wide assessment of the customer’s environment was conducted by Blazeclan’s team, followed by questionnaire-run application workshops and tool-based discovery. All the data was aggregated and moved in groups to AWS cloud.

The assessment gave a clear picture of the scale of migration, which involved

  • 2 data centres
  • 9000+ VMs and servers
  • 550+ business applications

Blazeclan carried out a lift and shift approach for migrating the customer’s environment, which began with the migration of 7 applications, which was considered to be the pilot batch. Once pilot applications were migrated and the assessment was completed, Blazeclan’s team was ready with segregating the first 25% of applications for migration. By now 15-20 apps have been migrated and in 2021, the target is to migrate 80 applications to the cloud.

Benefits Achieved by the Customer

  • Without any optimization made to the applications, the customer achieved enormous business benefit, thanks to right-sizing.
  • A modernized landscape was offered to the customer using cloud-native solutions at the end of the second stage of migration. This empowered them with containerization of applications, serverless architecture, and infrastructure optimization.
  • All dependencies of the applications were automatically discoverable.
